The Barn Is EMPTY!!!!

 

For the first time since last September, the barn has no horses or donkeys in it needing nursing care.  At one point we had Biscuit, Grace and Whiskey  all in the barn at the same time.  Biscuit and Whiskey following hospital stays, and Grace needing special care after being abandoned and left to die on State land.  Most recently, Jazz had a corneal ulcer, spent several days in the hospital and needed round the clock care when he came back to the rescue.  Over 43 hours of nursing care in April alone.  To have the barn empty is such a blessing!   On April, 25, 2024, we were able to have the subpalpebral lavage system removed from Jazz's eye.  He no longer needs antibiotic drops in his eye and when we put stain in it, there was no uptake, meaning no more infection.  He still gets pain and anti-inflammatory drops, but only for another week or so.     Jazz is also sporting a shaded fly mask to protect his eyes now that he is back out in the pasture with all of his friends.  He sticks very close to our white donkey named Ramey, who kept him company while confined to the barn since April 2nd.

Biscuit, who came to us last August with a broken bone in her foot. Had surgery installing pins and screws to join the fractured bone to the adjoining bone and spent a month at Chaparral Equine Hopsital before coming to the rescue on September 22, 2023. She needed 7 months of restricted movement, bandage changes after the cast removal, lots of medicines and supplements to help healing, then hand walking, Bemer treatments, massage and more as she regained her ability to walk.  She also received acupuncture and chinese herb to help in her recovery.      On April 29th, Biscuit was finally able to leave the rescue and return to her former life as a therapy horse helping children heal from bad things that have happened to them in their lifetime.  Thanks so a special donation, we were able to provide the care that was needed so she could continue to help children and enrich their lives, rather that euthanasia which was her only other option.  After 8 months of tender loving care, she will be missed so much, but if she is able to break through the trauma even one child has endured and bring them wellness, all the extensive care she got at the rescue will be so worth it.   When Biscuit left, we were able to put Grace in with Forest, the blind orphaned foal (pictured above).  He will be two years old later this year and is still stunted in his growth after having almost perished before being found and saved.  Grace came to us December 4, 2023, having been found by local residents when they noticed her abandoned on State land and left to die with no food or water.  She was barely able to walk to load her in our trailer and bring her to the rescue.     She has since received a lot of treatment for both navicular in her front feet and also a shredded (torn) deep digital flexor tendon (DDFT) on her right front foot.  With special shoes and frequest trims, PRP (platlet rich protein) treatment, supportive bandaging, supplements, oral and topical pain meds, she is slowly mending the torn DDFT.  This week she had her dentistry done and based on her teeth she is in her very late teens to early 20's.  Her injuries are commonly seen in horses used for competitions like roping or barrel racing.  We are so thankful she was found. After years of competitive services to humans, she did not deserve to die alone in an empty field.  We adore her, a true Christmas present and will do what we can to keep her comfortable, give her love and when the time is rigth for her.....let her go peacefully.  We hope that is a long time away.      Whiskey, pictured above, returned from a week in the hospital on November 1, 2023, needing nursing care for enteritis and colitis which took 10 weeks till he was considered recovered and able to go out into pasture.  Much of his time in the barn was under quarantine where I was the only one giving him treatment, feeding, cleaning his stall and handling bio-security.  Through it all, no other equines got sick and he is now 100%, so the high level of work was so very worth it.   Three with hospital stays and all needing extensive care was costly and we thank you all so very much for the funds you donated to help us provide the level of care that was needed.   Having equine specific Certification through the American Association of Equine Vet Techs (AAEVT) and dual certification for equine dentistry has been a huge cost savings to the rescue as we can provide a higher level of care on-site that most other rescues are able to.  Our volunteers do such a fabulous job of helping with many tasks and they are eager to watch and learn too.  We have a most wonderful team of caring volunteers.     I want to follow up with some statistics from 2023.  On January 1, 2023, we had 40 horses, donkeys and minis at the rescue.  During the year we had 82 requests from people to take in over 130+ equines, of those requests we were able to assist and bring 40 horses, donkeys or minis into the rescue. During that same time, we had 31 adopted or go to long-term foster (which usually become failed fosters and are adopted), and sadly seven, Teddy the General, Cheyenne and Scout who came to us from Journey's End Ranch Animal Sanctuary, Coco, Layla, CeCi and Trooper crossed the rainbow bridge during the year.  We ended the year with 44 equines so you can see it was a VERY busy year.     We had planned to do our spring on-line auction the end of April, but things were just to busy taking care of all the equines so we have scheduled our big FUNdraiser for June 4-7th.   We have some wonderful donated items and gift certificiates that will be great items to bid on and just in time for Father's Day.   So mark your calendars.   We will give you some reminders over the next few weeks.     Lastly, we would like to ask you to give us a review on Great NonProfits.  For more than a decade, we have received the TOP RATED designation because of the great reviews you have given us.   It only takes a few minutes and your input is so valuable.   There is a botton that says "SHARE MY STORY"  at this link  https://greatnonprofits.org/org/equine-wellbeing-rescue-inc to get started!  All reviews will be visible to potential donors, grantors and volunteers.
