It has been extremely busy since my last email. We had the delivery of 8 donkeys and one mini horse from a hoarding-starvation situation in Texas, took in a mule that needed a new family because her owner physically could not care for her anymore, took in an emaciated mare whose owner was hospitalized, found homes and got several adopted and last week, I had arthroscopic surgery on my knee to repair the torn meniscus that just wasn't healing. We will do a separate post on all of that, but wanted to show you how far we have come with project Back-up Generator. |
We purchased a 24,000 watt Generator from Lowe's who did a price match to the same unit that was cheaper at Home Depot, they then took 5% off because we used a Lowe's credit card, no tax because we are tax-exempt and they delivered it for free. We scored a savings $1322.06 from the normal cost. It was delivered February 2nd. Dennis and Lary started working on the area where the generator and propane tank will go. First having to remove a dying tree and leveling out the area with the tractor. They also had to dig up and move our propane line which was sticking up in the middle of the entire area and is now safely next to the fence and out of the way. |
Next step after clearning and leveling the area and movng the propane line was to build two cement slabs, one for the propane tank and one for the back-up generator. This took another trip to Lowe's to get the lumber, Quik-Crete and hardware, then 8 hours to make the bases, mix the concrete and pour into the molds. Last step in that process was to put cinders around each pad which only took about an hour. Now for the propane take, we have learned that if you want to shop around for the best pricing of propane and no be beholding to one company, it is best to own your tank, so Lary spent many hours calling all the propane companies and reserchng Craigslist and MarketPlace to find a good quality used tank. He finally found one a good price down in the valley so he left early in the morning and drove all the way to Dewey-Humbolt to purchase a refurbished and tested tank. It took him an entire day to go there and back, but we saved money doing it this way. Isn't it a nice looking tank? |
Now the pads are in, the propane tank in place and last week we had the propane filled. The system is separate from our home system, which is the tall white tank you see. We only have a stove that runs on propane so we have never needed a large tank. The tall white one you see lasts us about a year. The next step will be to set up the back-up generator and get an electrician to hook it up to the electric panel and connect the propane take lines to the generator. For safety reasons, they are not beside each other. So far we have used $7075.48 of the funds raised and we cannot thank Dennis and Lary enough for donating so much time and free labor to this project. That alone is saving us thousands of dollars. We will keep you in the loop was we finish the project and again, cannot thank you all enough for your donations to help make everything safer and more functional for the 34 horses, donkeys and minis at the rescue. Stay tuned! We have some exciting news about our recent intakes.... We have a baby on the way. Details to follow. Christine & All of us at EqWBR |
